The cello studio at the Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University (OCU), directed by Prof. Tomasz Zięba from 2003 to 2022, offered an exceptional environment for students to immerse themselves in the study of cello alongside outstanding musicians from around the world. During those two decades, the faculty and students were united by a shared belief in the power of positive attitude, creativity, and mutual support, as well as the cultivation of critical thinking skills essential in shaping successful artists.

One of the hallmarks of the program was the Cellovoce Ensemble, an ensemble comprised exclusively of cello players in which all music majors collaborated and performed together. This ensemble provided invaluable opportunities for students to develop their ensemble skills, foster camaraderie, and present their artistry in diverse settings. Under Zięba’s leadership, Cellovoce enjoyed recognition both locally and internationally, with notable appearances at the European Musical Workshops in Kołobrzeg, Poland in 2009 and 2011, where the studio participated and where Zięba also served as a faculty professor. Additional distinguished performances included OKC Arts Council’s Art Moves series, U.S. National Anthem for the Oklahoma City Thunder NBA games, and concerts at the Blue Doors at Tenkiller.

The studio regularly hosted guest teachers and soloists, offering students unique opportunities for artistic enrichment through lessons, masterclasses, and recitals. These experiences allowed young cellists to learn from leading professionals and gain diverse perspectives on music-making.

A memorable international highlight was the studio’s participation in the Hello-Cello Festival in Kraków, Poland in 2017, reflecting the program’s commitment to providing immersive cultural experiences and opportunities for artistic growth.

Throughout its twenty years, the OCU cello studio was distinguished by its dedication to excellence, strong work ethic, and a supportive community of passionate musicians. It was a place where students thrived—surrounded by peers and mentors who shared their enthusiasm, artistic curiosity, and commitment to the craft.
